Our first brew at our NEW Brewery, Norwich & Beyond Pub Festival and more!
Smallburgh....
As you may already know, Wildcraft Brewery is expanding and relocating soon from our lovely little barn at Foragers Rest in Buxton, to a brand new site on the Worstead Farms estate in Smallburgh. Our big move has required months of hard work and preparation, but it is finally on the horizon and there is certainly a buzz in the air! The 'DRIVE' grant we received from the European Regional Development Fund has enabled the dream to become a reality, for which we are really thankful.
Last week we conducted our first brew at the new site, to test out all the equipment and make sure everything is up to scratch! For our first brew we went with our award-winning and perfectly popular Wild Un-bongo, our mango neipa.
This is what we learned completing our first brew...
We were able to brew approx. 2000 litres of beer in a day, which is 2.5 x the amount we could previously do in a day at our Buxton site (750 litre).
Ben, assistant brewer, said that the new equipment and set up we have means it is much easier and quicker to brew the beer, but much harder to clean up afterwards as the equipment is much bigger than before!
We also reflected that the new equipment we have, whilst it gets the job done quicker, is
requiring us to re-learn parts of our job roles as it’s a completely new routine and set up.
We are still tweaking some recipes to accommodate the larger scale of production, but we do know that the beer made at both sites will produce the same Wild flavours and high quality beer that we all know and love!
We are still having to transport water from our old site at Buxton to our new site, using 1000 litre water containers; this is due to a number of reasons but mainly because the water quality and taste is different in varying
locations, and we are still working out exactly HOW the water here at Smallburgh will affect the quality and taste of our beer, if at all!
Another thing Ben commented on was the vast amount of ingredients we are going through, and how the difference in amount of beer we are making will soon start to affect other aspects of the business, such as order and delivery processes.
I asked Ben what he learned from being at the new site for the first brew, and his response was ‘don’t brew when it's 35 degrees’!! Sorry Ben...

Wildcraft is taking part in the Norwich and Beyond Pub Festival; a month-long celebration bringing together over 100 pubs and breweries in Norwich and beyond. Brought to you by Norwich & District CAMRA.
Wildcraft has been paired with four pubs, Shoulder of Mutton (Strumpshaw), The Chequers (Hainford), Cross Keys (Dilham) and Whalebone (Norwich). Expect to find our lovely beers in these places for the duration of the event!

Hi everyone, hope you’re keeping well. We’re keeping fairly busy during these hot, sunny days, especially in preparation of relocating premises completely!
As you all know this is not a simple process nor easy & there are definitely hurdles along the way such as transporting our Arlington full of water from our current brewery in Buxton, to our new brewery in Smallburgh, this is due to the makeup & mineral content involved in water which we use for our brews.
Simple things can affect the taste & end result of our product if we change ingredients or the process. The levels of Iron were way too high at the new brewery which means we’re going to be transporting this for a while until we can get mineral content accurate.
